Shaping Eyebrows: How to do by Threading, Waxing and Plucking

Well shaped eyebrows give more definition to your face and make you look more attractive. You need not go for surgery or use expensive eye creams to give your eyes lift. All you need is a pair of groomed, well-shaped eyebrows. This is the cheapest and quickest eye lift you can buy. This is what is said by Natalie Gee, the brow expert and co-owner of Gee Beauty in Toronto and Bal Harbour, Florida. According to her, eyebrows are able to make a dramatic difference to your appearance because they frame your face. Compared to the skinny arches of the 90s, modern eyebrow is bigger and bolder. Try to keep your brows as full as you can, but remember to choose what is best for your face shape.

You can consult with a professional in this field to put your best eyebrows forward. You can bring pictures of brows that you like and discuss with the aesthetician as to which one suits you the best. Gee admires the eyebrows of Angelina Jolie, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and Eva Mendes. She is for ‘full’ and ‘natural’ brows. If you are not able to choose from threading, waxing and tweezing, read on and you will know what each technique can do for you. This way you will be able to choose what is best for you.

Threading Eyebrows:

How it works:

Threading is an ancient Persian technique. It helps in getting rid of individual hairs or rows of hairs with the help of a thread. You have to twist a loop of thread around the hairs and remove them. This is a very common practice and you will be offered this service in all beauty parlours.

Best for:

threading is best for people having sensitive skin. Unlike waxing, threading does not cause pulling or stretching of the skin. Since it does not remove the uppermost layer of the skin, this technique is also beneficial for people who are using skin-thinning oral or topical products like Retin-A. Threading can also pull out the shortest hairs, which is not possible in waxing. So, if you have hair that is dark and coarse, it is easier for you to maintain your brows with threading, as you can do this often and you need not wait for the hairs to reach a certain length. For waxing your hair should be at least ¼ inch long.

Need to know:

You should not try to thread your own eyebrows. It is also important that you choose your aesthetician carefully. This is because threading is a very difficult technique although it appears to be simple. So, remember not to go to any parlour you see. Ask for references and then go. You can do threading every 10 days.

Waxing Eyebrows:

How it works:

Waxing is also an effective technique to remove unwanted hairs from your eyebrows and get well shaped eyebrows. In waxing a thin layer of wax hot or cold wax is applied on the area where you have to remove hair. Then a strip of cloth is placed over the wax and pressed in the direction of hair growth. After that it is left for a minute or two and then the cloth is pulled off in a rapid motion. This way the wax as well as the hair is removed.

Best for:

Waxing is best for people who want defined arches. Most of the aestheticians use a small wooden spatula for applying the wax on the area where hair is to be removed. Waxing with wooden spatula helps in creating a curved, polished look around the eyebrow bones. Waxing is one of the most popular methods of brow shaping and you get this facility in almost all salons.

Need to know:

When you wax your eyebrows to remove unwanted hairs, it can cause lots of stretching and pulling of the skin on the brow area. This can be tough on the delicate skin present around your eyes. So, if you are using oral or topical retinoid, you should avoid waxing. This is because in such cases it can cause scarring and tearing. You can do waxing every 4 weeks.

Eyebrows Plucking:

How it works:

The best way to remove individual hairs from the root is to use a pair of tweezers with angled tip.

Best for:

Shaping and maintaining the eyebrows at home. You can always do a little tweezing daily for removing the strays that fall well below the eyebrow. Tweezing regularly helps in keeping your eyebrows neat and shapely.

Need to know:

Make sure that you have a good pair of tweezers with you. Opt for sharp and slanted style. You should not remove more than one or two hairs at a time. If you try to pluck more, then it can break your hair into half and leave the root in the follicles. So, make sure that you did not overdo it. For getting best results, you should tweeze in an area where there is lots of natural light. Work slowly and remove one or two hairs at a time. This way you will get the best results.

Choose the right tweezers for plucking your eyebrows. Tweezing after your shower helps in opening the follicles and softening the hairs. This way the hairs will be able to slip out more easily. Do not use a magnifying mirror when you tweeze your eyebrows. Instead of a magnifying mirror, you can use a normal mirror.

After removing a few hairs, you can take a look from a distance and then remove more if required.
